Sometimes it takes a while for us to learn our lessons, Kaitlyn, and this goes for America as well as ourselves.

First, let us quickly summarize the sad story of Hurricane Katrina.

She blew into the Gulf of Mexico on Labor Day Weekend in 2005 and after wandering around a bit, she grew to a cat 5 storm. The whole country was atwitter. That is the whole country EXCEPT the local DEMOCRATIC politicos down New Orleans way. Below a montage I compiled back in 2005 and note that the then Louisiana Governor, the fine and resolute Kathleen Blanco, advised her citizens to PRAY!

Yeah, that's the ticket, Kaitlyn.

Which is not to say I don't think a prayer can help, mind you, but praying while looking down the barrel of a Cat 5 hurricane is not nearly enough precaution and even Jesus would agree with this, Kaitlyn Mae.

In one of my many "Katrina for Kaitlyn" posts, Kaitlyn Mae, I did post about Louisiana's NEW Governor, the...read my lips...REPUBLICAN...Bobby Jindal.

For it does not matter whether it's a woman, a man, black, white or even an Indian-American like Jindal, Kaitlyn. It matters that those we elect to lead...actually LEAD. Giving press conferences and advising prayer, Kaitlyn...nope, that's NOT leadership.

It turned out that while Katrina overturned plenty of cars, blew off a plethora of domestic roofs and uprooted plenty of trees, as hurricanes are wont to do, it was the rupture of the infamous New Orleans’ levees which destroyed the great American city of New Orleans, Kaitlyn, and don't let anybody or any text book tell you different.

It would also turn out, Kaitlyn, that plenty of money had been coming in
from the federal government to inspect and shore up those levees, Kaitlyn, and it's anybody guess just what they did with those funds.

Also, New Orleans is a city that is essentially a bowl sitting below sea level. Most of America did not know this Kaitlyn but with that knowledge many of us out here in la-la land, you know us folks who carry this country on our backs whilst raising the citizens and soldiers of tomorrow, began to ponder if building a city that requires ineffective levees around it along with huge pumps to drain the bowl after a storm...well is this such a good idea?

It's been three years since Hurricane Katrina and despite the best efforts and intentions of many die-hard Orleans residents, the city is still basically a ghost town.

Flash forward three years to the weekend before Labor Day of 2008. A handsome hurricane formed on the Atlantic Ocean and its name was Gustav.

It was the weekend before the Republican convention and nerves were frayed, Kaitlyn. John McCain was the nominee for the GOP and Sarah Palin, then Governor of Alaska and a surprise to many Republicans across the fruited plains, was McCain’s VP nominee.

The Republicans were nervous about kicking off a rollicking convention whilst citizens of New Orleans once again were suffering and dying due to a vicious storm. The Republicans chose to keep convention activities to a minimum that Monday night when Gustav hit.

That weekend prior to Gustav’s impact in the Gulf, aimed directly at New Orleans much like Katrina as the forecasters predicted, the leaders in Louisiana behaved quite differently than those in charge during Katrina.

The obvious is Louisiana’s Governor Jindal was a REPUBLICAN, which even the welfare-cultured persons in New Orleans knew was required to cut through the Democrat culture of corruption in that state.

Jindal did not hold press conferences like his predecessor Kathleen Blanco, much less offer the wise advice that we all should pray, perhaps a chorus of Kimbya would stop the mighty storm.

Ray Nagin, elected again, improbably, by citizens of New Orleans even though he left school buses to be swamped with river water during Katrina, was quite the different fellow during the run up to Gustav’s landing.

“If you don’t vacate this city you better have an axe,” Nagin told the citizens of New Orleans, citizens that just three years prior he’d opened a local stadium for them with no advice to get out of town. “Because you’re going to have to chop your way out from your roof tops if those levees don’t hold. You will NOT be rescued.”

Funny how firmer and more forceful the tone becomes when there’s leadership from the top. I don’t know what happened to Kathleen Blanco but she’s obscure and shamed from the disaster that hit her state during Katrina, a big zero, a nothing bloop in the history books. Her children must be so proud of her.

Oh they blamed it all on George Dubya Bush, Kaitlyn. Never mind that funds provided by the Feds were evidently not used to shore up those levees as earmarked, even though the freaking pathetic Governor of the state actually suggested prayer as an answer to the vicious weather coming at Louisiana known as Hurricane Katrina, even though New Orleans’ Mayor Ray Nagin left his citizens to drown in the local football stadium and school buses that could have been used for evacuation were left to be covered with flood waters, useless and silent while citizens climbed to roof tops to be rescued.

The Federal government was a bit slow on the uptake Kaitlyn but dear Lord any fool who sits around waiting for the federal government to rush in and rescue them is just that…a damn fool.

Saving one’s self, hey, it’s first the responsibility of the individual and yes, I know Kaitlyn, it’s a concept liberals really do not like. Your life and happiness should be placed upon a central and powerful government headed by, you guessed it, liberals like themselves who pray in the face of hurricanes.

Louisiana Bobby Jindal was out every day in the run up to Gustav. He had the facts at his disposal. He stayed in his state during the storm even though he missed the opportunity of a lifetime as a scheduled speaker for the Republican convention. He led, Kaitlyn. He told his citizens to evacuate, he got them out of town. He had every contingency from hospital patients to jailed criminals accounted for and had a plan to get them to a safe place.

I was impressed all to hell by Bobby Jindal and hoped at the bottom of my mean heart that the lovely Kathleen Blanco, who didn’t have the courage to request help from the Louisiana National Guard, Kaitlyn!…I hope Blanco sat and watched and I hope she was ashamed.

Kaitlyn, saving yourself, it’s on you honey. Don’t wait for the federal government to come rescue you, sweetheart. I’d softly suggest you shouldn’t even wait for the state but given a choice understand that government bureaucrats are not known far and wide for being innovative and quick to assess and solve a crisis.

Keep that in mind and always remember, Democrats have gone over to the dark side a long time ago.<br /Pat McLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13268258836565578400noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3657509643702856398.post-6520607631218439272007-11-05T12:53:00.000-08:002009-02-04T15:45:10.543-08:00Katrina-Louisiana Elects REPUBLICAN Governor! We've got "Friday Night Lights" and Fox's "The Next Great American Band"...a surprisingly entertaining and brutally real contest.

As always, with pics and video you'll find nowhere else on the Internet.
Pic of the Day
Republican Bobby Jindal Wins Governorship of Louisiana

Below this narrative is a list of links I’ve compiled about Hurricane Katrina and how corrupt government brought down a great American city. There is also an explanation of my logic but for now, I direct my commentary to sweet granddaughter Kaitlyn, who will someday read grandmother’s Blog as alternate to the history books that will no doubt be filled with lies.

So Kaitlyn, in October 2007 in this year of our Lord, Louisiana began a positive climb back to pride and self-sufficiency. For Louisiana now has a very conservative Governor. The Governor during the disaster known as Hurricane Katrina, Kathleen Blanco, is no more. The citizens of that state kicked her failing behind out the door.

I’ve been lamenting the lack of pride of Louisianans who keep electing Democrats that would keep abusing them. Well no more sweet granddaughter.

From Redstate.com:

Today is not a good day for Republicans. It is, but it isn't really. Today is instead a good day for Louisiana and for this country. If a state like Louisiana can overcome its legacies and histories and vote for a guy named Jindal of East Indian heritage and make him the Governor of Huey Long's populist-socialist mecca, this nation can overcome anything.

I’d also like to take a moment to inform you of another serious natural disaster that hit the state of California, also in the month of October 2007. That state was hit was a series of fires that caused over 50,000 to evacuate their homes and the burning of an estimated 1,500 houses.

The Governor of California at this time is a Republican. The state of California weathered this natural disaster in fine fashion. Lazy people who did not heed the warning to evacuate did not have to be rescued from roof tops. Criminal politicians did not abscond with National Guard Trucks to recover illegally gotten cash. Stadiums were peaceful places filled with anxious but content evacuees. The Democrats, besides nut case Barbara Boxer, were not out and screaming that the fires were all Bush’s fault. FEMA came right behind local evacuations and was not expected to save lives as a first responder. The Governator was at Qualcomm stadium consulting with the evacuees and regularly talked to the nation, assuring California that recovery would begin soon and life would return to normal.

The contrast of the California fires to Katrina was remarkable in the difference in leadership. Remember this sweet Kaitlyn when you might think of casting your precious vote for a liberal.

Finally, Kaitlyn, we have this, from the Telegraph.com:

Scientists have made a breakthrough in man's desire to control the forces of nature – unveiling plans to weaken hurricanes and steer them off course, to prevent tragedies such as Hurricane Katrina.

Wow, this is scary. I can see it now, humans batting hurricanes around all over the planet like they were big ping-pong balls. Just who would decide where to send a hurricane, I would ask? The United Nations? You say they should just knock it out to sea? You don’t think some Jihadist might think slamming hurricanes into the American mainland wouldn’t be great fun?

Someday, perhaps when you grow up Kaitlyn, human beings MIGHT be able to control the weather. I will never say never.

But I doubt it, Kaitlyn. Some things are way bigger than our puny human selves.
===================
Since Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in 2005 I've been keeping a separate series of the effects of the hurricane, the politics of it, the ongoing attempts to bring flooded New Orleans back to normalcy.

I documented it all from the day of the hurricane on through today. For you were but a year old when a hurricane hit this country’s Gulf coast and slammed directly into New Orleans.

It was near the end of the month and that city’s welfare checks wouldn’t be coming out for a couple of days. Thousands of families with only those government handouts for income didn’t have gas to evacuate the city in advance of a storm they knew was coming for at least a week prior.

The storm hit and the city’s infamous levees broke. The hurricane itself was no big deal beyond the kind of deal a hurricane is. Those levees breaking were the real disaster. They’d been designed, or so it’s been alleged, to withstand at least a Force 3 hurricane. But with the corruption in that city, ran by Democrats for many years, goodness knows federal money allocated for levee repair was diverted to the friends of local politicos.

It was a mess, Kaitlyn, and the media managed to make the hurricane somehow the fault of the federal government! Well hell, do we expect the local recipients of all those federal funds to have an evacuation plan or something silly like that?

Thus I documented the storm, the time leading up to the storm, and the aftermath. It’s now been two years and still the lying media, who got it all wrong, “celebrate” the day that Katrina destroyed a great American city.

I’ve got a couple more stories and updates on the Katrina aftermath now some two years later. Kaitlyn, please do not let your teachers lie and deceive you. It’s why I do all this work documenting and linking the truth for you.

Interestingly, below is the first story following Hurricane Katrina that illustrate the true American spirit.

For young people looking to make a name and reputation for themselves are descending to New Orleans in droves. It’s the kind of “can-do” American spirit that made this country great.

Although it’s been two full years since this infamous storm, Kaitlyn, sadly, New Orleans still is mostly a ghost town.

From Foxnews.com:

A few years back, the big acronym was "DINK," for "double income, no kids." They range in age from 21 to 35 years old and come from all walks of life — they may be accountants or attorneys or architects. Some are young people who are from here. Here's hoping at least one political visitor will be brave enough to say the truth: that while many New Orleans residents are courageously taking the initiative to rebuild their homes, they cannot build an effective police and prosecutorial force on their own.

Even though the howling Democrats railed the stingy White House for denying them funds to fix the levees, it’s now two years after Katrina and per the article above, the criminals still roam New Orleans in lethal packs, demoralizing, robbing and killing those citizens trying to rebuild and return home.

Not a word of complaint is uttered about the local government’s CONTINUING inability to control crime.

New Orleans’ Property Taxes On the Rise

From Opinionjournal.com:

The second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina arrived yesterday, with the White House disclosing that U.S. taxpayers have chipped in no less than $127 billion (including $13 billion in tax relief) to rebuild the Gulf region. The Center currently has a grant that enables it to offer free technical assistance to landowners in the Red & White Clay Creek Watersheds who want to help improve the creeks on their properties and help restore water quality in the region.

The greatest challenge to water quality is excess nutrient and sediment runoff. Forested stream buffers are the most effective tools for removing nutrient and sediment pollution from stormwater runoff.

A Riparian Buffer Consultant from the Stroud Water Research Center will create a Riparian Buffer Management Plan for interested landowners at no cost. This plan will give the landowner all the information required to plant and manage a riparian buffer. A variety of native trees and shrubs will be specified for planting. Additionally, the consultant will be available to address any questions that may arise over time concerning the management of the buffer.

Once the plan has been completed, the landowner will be eligible for cost share assistance to install the buffer. Funding is also available for fencing to exclude livestock from the stream, streambank crossings for livestock and equipment access, as well as for streambank restoration. In order to be eligible for this assistance, the landowner must have a stream on their property in the Red or White Clay Creek Watersheds that is not forested. The property may be commercial or residential.

The goal of this program is to restore fifty miles of riparian buffers in both watersheds.

Linda Stapleford
River Administrator
White Clay Wild and Scenic Program
802 Dallam Road
Newark, DE 19711
302-731-1756
riveradministrator@whiteclay.org

Let us update just what’s going on here.

About two or three days after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf states, about the time cannibalism was running rampant in New Orleans’ Superdome and citizens were left to die on rooftops, heh, I began documenting the aftermath of the hurricane.

It’s been almost a year and a half and I continue to keep track of how New Orleans and Louisiana are faring because like the hysterical ancient Media is wont to do, they had absolutely nothing right.

Also, Hurricane Katrina continues to be pinned onto President Bush when it was the local government who failed so miserably. So much for the notion the levees were built to withstand anything less than a category 4.

This is only the latest in a string of stories correcting, amending and often reversing what we were told at the time. The string is so long the fabric of Katrina reporting has unraveled utterly. It's enough to encourage caution, if not outright cynicism, about all reporting, particularly during emergencies.

In the hours and days after the hurricane struck, the press reported conditions inside the Superdome and Convention Center had descended to Boschian (Hieronymous) depravity. We were told "little babies" were being raped, and that stabbings and murders were widespread. The mayor and police chief of New Orleans repeated these rumors on television, thus transforming them from scuttlebutt to "news."

FEMA, believing the stories broadcast worldwide, showed up at the Convention Center with a refrigerated 18-wheeler and three doctors to process bodies. They were expecting, reported the Seattle Times, at least 200. How many actually died in the two locations? Six. Below is an article about the change in the political landscape in Louisiana due to the evacuation of so many New Orleans’ residents.

Who, it must be understood, always voted Democrat for the political handouts that would be promised to them. So many of these base voters have left the state and it would appear many are not coming back.

Who can blame them? They managed to find all kinds of buses to get these people to the polls but when their lives were in danger they left the buses to flood.

I don’t know what the political climate in Louisiana will be when you are old enough to read this. I suspect Louisiana, a mixed political state before Katrina, will be a lot more conservative that it had been.

Just so you know, Kaitlyn Mae, how it happened. Don’t let your teachers tell you different.

Before hurricanes Katrina and Rita, there was a familiar equilibrium in the Louisiana Legislature, whose hallway still is pocked with bullet holes from Huey P. Poor fellow, arrested for a misdemeanor, held in a New Orleans’ jail and left to drown in flood waters. Now this fellow, an American citizen, can’t even get a trial!

We’ll keep following this story.

For those who might have missed his story, Jim had been arrested and jailed in Bernard Parish near New Orleans. He had been advised by his legal aid lawyer that if he pleaded guilty on August 27, when he would be brought to court, the charges to be reduced to a misdemeanor and be released for time served. That’s what he expected, but then came Katrina and all bets were off.

It’s been over 2 ½ months now since Jimbo began his Odyssey on August 28, 2005, the day after he expected to go free. when he was sitting in jail waiting for his court date. Two months later, he is
still sitting in jail with no attorney and no court date scheduled.

Earlier this week Jimbo called his Mom to tell her they have been moved from the “visiting shed” to the main prison at Angola. He has not yet been brought before any judge to be charged or make his
plea. How long can an American citizen be held without being charged with anything? Note: it was written before he was transferred.

Below I give you Jimbo’s 3rd letter to his Mom. If his tone is different, it might be because unlike when he wrote the first two, he is now aware that his words are being repeated on the internet.
Also attached, is a letter he and a fellow inmate collaborated on describing their ordeal. His previous correspondence can be found here.

Now, direct from Camp-D Visit Shed run by the Great State of Louisiana, in Angola, La, here’s Jimbo’s latest letter to come into my possession. Some of those animals were dropped off at facilities in South Carolina and Maryland. About 28 of them were brought to Stoney Creek Vet.

When Craig arrived, she saw that the animals were being kept in close quarters at an overcrowded private shelter two hours north of New Orleans.

Craig said that half of the animals were rescued from the hurricane, and half of them were surrendered because of it.

Craig was invited to join the team that traveled to Lousiana because she is a veterinary technician who does relief work.

At first, Craig had mixed feelings about the groups mission, since the addition of the animals to the community would likely mean that other animals in local shelters would not get adopted. But Craigs mind was quickly changed.

They were in desperate need, she said. Theres no doubt about that.

The animals that traveled back with the team were incredibly social, according to Craig.

They were very happy to be with somebody, she said. They were a very congenial group.

Craig adopted a Siamese cat, Ivy, that she brought back. Ivy rode in the front of the truck with Craig because she was pregnant. She had five tabby kittens on Oct. 5.

Her kittens are up for adoption, but shell stay with us, she said.

Craig wasnt the only person who unexpectedly adopted one of the pets that were brought to Stoney Creek. Ashley Lineberry, a McLeansville resident, works as a receptionist at Stoney Creek Veterinary Hospital and adopted a Chihuahua she named Doc after veterinarian Dr. Glenn Huth.

Something just happened when I saw that dog, she said.

Lineberrys 9-year-old daughter Hayley is thrilled about the familys new addition. They already had three dogs and one cat.

We have a zoo at my house, she said. She added that all the animals are now getting along well, although Doc initially growled at their rottweiler.

Tina Higgs, Stoney Creek Veterinary Hospitals office manager, said that all but four of the rescued pets were adopted on the night they arrived, Sept. 12.

Everybody got a home, she said. We were overwhelmed because there were so many people.

The hospital kept the pets that night so that they could be checked for heart worm and intestinal parasites. They were also introduced to their new diet during their overnight stay.

Laura Parsons, of Greensboro, adopted a small cattle dog named Stormy from Stoney Creek and a pointer terrier mix named Ingram from a friend. Ingram was also from Hurricane Katrina; Parsons friend was providing him a temporary home.

I was not going to foster because I knew we would get too attached, she said. They become part of your family.

Parsons last dog was killed when it was hit by a car. Her 4-year- old daughter Madison welcomed two new pets.

We havent really had any problems, she said. Ultimately, I think the owners (in Lousiana) werent in a place where they could take care of them.

Craig said that Elaine French, who lives in Greensboro and traveled to pick up the animals from Louisiana, adopted a poodle that was blind in both eyes. There’s been yet another major hurricane to hit this country in this year of our Lord, 2005. Her name was Wilma and her appearance pretty much used up all the names for hurricanes and we’re now up to Hurricane Beta on this date in late October 2005!

Even after Katrina and Rita, Kaitlyn, people STILL do not take care of their stupid selves. For when Wilma was threatening Florida, the vilified FEMA was in position and ready with ice, water and food.

Kaitlyn, listen closely to Grandmother. Should a hurricane threaten, first fill all bath tubs you have with water. This alone will get you through almost a week for such as pet drinking water, coffee, and such. At the least this will give enough water for three days. Also, stock up on canned goods and goodness get a manual can opener Grandmother will remind.

Consider the pets and provide for them. Get a couple of Kerosene lanterns, charge up the cell phones, same with portable computers. In short get ready for a couple of days of no electricity and LIVE WITH IT.

Because the day AFTER Wilma struck, Florida residents were all lined up and complaining about how long it was taking to get the supplies FEMA was offering.

Way I figure, the silly citizens of this country who think the government exists only to save them with no effort on their part, will not be happy until FEMA shows up at their doorstep the minute the last hurricane raindrop falls, with all supplies required. FEMA will then fill the ice chests with the delivered ice, fire up taxpayer-provided generators, fix three full-course meals, monitor all health care needs. FEMA will do this for each and every citizen who made the choice to live in a Hurricane zone.

THEN those that are not the fittest and would not survive without the government’s help MIGHT be satisfied.

<img style="margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer;cursor:hand;"src="http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b323/patfish/dailyupdate/wilma1underdailyupdate.jpg" border="0" alt="Image hosted by Photobucket.com" />

~~~~~~~~~~
Blanco and the Dead Bodies
Rumors are swirling this week, Kaitlyn, that Louisiana Governor Blanco would not provide instructions for almost a week on how to dispose of the dead bodies left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
It’s probably true. Not one so-called leader in Louisiana showed one smidgeon of leadership. So the dead bodies were left to rot and decay while Edith Bunker Blanco chewed her nails and tried to decide.
They make me ill, Kaitlyn.
~~~~~~~~~~

Pets and Disaster

I’ve made so much disasters and pets, Kaitlyn. My argument was, and still is, that provisions should be made, first by the pet owners themselves, second by emergency personnel, to provide for our pets in the event of a disaster.

Most normal humans are simply NOT going to leave their pets behind.

So I insert this article I came upon that at the very least, Kaitlyn will follow the instructions and look out for her beloved charges.

Pet preparedness: What to do before disaster strikes

By Dr. Marty Becker
Source: Duluth News Tribune

Almost all of us live in areas that can be affected by natural disasters: hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, earthquakes, forest fires, even ice storms and power outages. Or we may face man-made disasters from a terrorist attack.

If an emergency like Hurricane Katrina were to strike your neighborhood, would you be prepared to safely evacuate your family and your pets?

"It is best to be overly cautious during a disaster warning," said Dr. Henry E. Childers, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association. "Even if you are told to leave your home for a 'short time,' take your pets with you. Every year lives are lost as people try to return to rescue pets or refuse to leave without their pets."

Yvonne Betowt, a cat-lover and features writer for the Huntsville Times, is more prepared that a Girl Scout when it comes to her fur-family. In fact, she sets the standard.

"People in Huntsville, Alabama, are very familiar with the destruction of a tornado and we don't take them lightly," she said. If Betowt is at home when a tornado threat is issued, she immediately makes room in the closet, under the stairs, in the middle of the house for her seven cats. She has five portable carriers including a giant one that can house three cats with comfort. The cats' names are listed on the carriers they go in as well as Betowt's contact information. Inside the closet with the carriers and cats are food, water, bowls, medications, empty litter box with a bag of litter; also, a pillow, blankets, a flashlight and a weather radio.

If no one is home when a tornado threat is issued, Betowt does her best to get home as fast as possible. If not possible, a neighbor has a key to her house and her cell phone number in case of an emergency.

While few people take the threat to pets as seriously as Betowt (who could probably run FEMA), you should.

Here are some tips to help you prepare:

- Have a portable carrier for each cat, small dog, bird or pocket pet. Have leashes for each dog.

- Have a "Pet Emergency Kit" that contains food, water, medicines, copies of medical records, contact information for your veterinarian and pictures of your pets. Also have temporary ID tags that can quickly be filled in with local contact information for wherever you may temporarily end up.

- Make arrangements with a family member, friend or neighbor who will take your companion animal if you are unable to return home. Give them an extra garage door opener, spare key or tell them where a key is hidden.

- Type or print up an "Emergency Care of Companion Animals" card and place it in your wallet. The card should state the number and type of pets in your home and who should be contacted in the event you are injured or hospitalized and can't return home. It also should list contact information for your veterinarian. Small current photos of your pets are great to carry in case you get separated from your pet and need help in locating them.

- If you are at home when a disaster strikes, or if you've been given warning to evacuate, neverleave your animals behind! Make arrangements to take them to a family member, a veterinary office, an animal shelter, or, ideally, take them with you.

- Make sure your pets are wearing a collar and ID tag with your names and cell phone number. Better yet, make sure all your pets have microchip identification and keep the registry current. Once you get to a safe location, apply a temporary ID tag with new local contact information (hotel, shelter, good Samaritan, etc.).

- Ask your veterinary hospital for a copy of the brochure, "Saving the Whole Family," or go to www.avma.org/disaster/saving--family.asp.

While we're busy rescuing our pets, they are just as busy rescuing us with their ability to comfort us during difficult times. Stroking your cat, walking the dog or talking to the bird can help lower blood pressure, decrease stress and help lead us down the journey to normalcy and recovery.

"If everyone is adequately educated and prepared to take care of the animals they own and evacuate them quickly," Childers added, "human lives will also be saved."

~~~~~~~~~~
The Katrina Political Cartoon of the Week
<img style="margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;"src="http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b323/patfish/Katrina/osamahurricaneunderkatrina.jpg" border="0" alt="Image hosted by Photobucket.com" />
~~~~~~~~~~

First Katrina/Kaitlyn post-the Beginning-9/6/05

9/7/05-H urricane Folklore/Wisdom and Nastiness

9/12/05-Hillary's "Katrina Kommission" and the Debacle of the Debit cards

9/14/05-FEMA Email; Dumb, blond Louisiana Senators

9/15/05-Ophelia and Grandmother

9/16/05-Katrina and the Helpless Pets

Stop Blaming FEMA-a pictorial explanation

What Will Become of New Orleans?

Katrina Gossip

Katrina Folklore

Nagin,the refinery bill,Character

Cops and Cadillacs

New Orleans’ Prisoners Left to Drown During Katrina

Pat McLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13268258836565578400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3657509643702856398.post-73044008074851047072005-10-25T04:08:00.000-07:002009-02-07T07:55:19.583-08:00True Crime-Horowitz,Behl,Stealing the Unborn; Katrina/Kaitlyn-Naginhead atwitter, Comments.It’s now two full months after Hurricane Katrina exposed the smarmy underbelly of New Orleans and how a city run by corrupt politicians can’t take care of itself.

STILL, Kaitlyn, they lie and try to change history.

This past week, Louisiana Senator Landreau, herself a nepotistic politician, daughter of former politicos and hip deep in the cesspool of New Orleans, denied that there was any corruption in New Orleans.

Here’s hoping, Kaitlyn Mae, that in your day there is still a city called New Orleans. If so, here’s also hoping that the folks running it are decent and dedicated to maintaining the vibrancy of New Orleans as opposed to the cowards and Moonbats responsible for all the hurt and heartbreak caused by Hurricane Katrina.

As of now there’s an inquiry into whether or not certain patients at hospitals were euthanized. Except for the nagging factoid known by so many true crime aficionados that it is almost ALWAYS the one closest to the victim who did the deed.

I’ve been reading unverified tidbits about this crime so take them for being just that.

First, Horowitz allegedly has an iron clad alibi for his whereabouts on the afternoon of the crime.

Second, Horowitz and his wife live in a strange situation, owning land with as many as four construction workers sharing the lot. Also, Horowitz purchased the lot next to the one on which he and his wife were building their dream home while living in a mobile home nearby. There’s supposedly “issues” between that lot’s former owner, allowed to live there for ten years per the terms of the sale, and Horowitz.

Third, Horowitz did have security cameras on the site but the home was not sealed tight. Allegedly instructions for overcoming the security alarm was attached right on the keypad.

The interesting thing about this murder, if nothing else, is that Horowitz is a renowned legal pundit, having appeared on CNN, Fox and other networks for his insight and wisdom. He is also considered to lean somewhat pro-defense and is well-remembered for his “defense” of Scott Peterson.

Finally, Horowitz is the lead attorney in defense of Susan Polk. Polk’s case was just this past Friday, 10/14/05, covered on NBC’s Dateline.

And what a weird case this one is. Susan is accused of murdering her husband. Her defense is that her husband was attacking her and she killed him in self-defense. Another amazing thing about the Polk case is the revelation that her husband, a Psychologist, was that he had been HER therapist when Susan was ONLY FIFTEEN!

This turn of events with Horowitz might well have some affect on this Polk case.

Stay tuned for more on this.
From CNN.com:

Pamela Vitale, 52, was found by her husband late Saturday afternoon in the entryway of a mobile home the couple occupied while building a dream house on the same Lafayette hilltop.

Horowitz -- who is defending Susan Polk in her closely watched trial on charges of killing of her therapist husband at their Orinda home -- declined to talk to reporters when he came to his property Sunday afternoon.

Police officials described Vitale's death as "violent."

~~~~~~~~~~
Coming Soon-The Trial of the Century
Just SOME of the charges:
---destroyed the marsh lands that were the source of income for Iraq’s so-called “Marsh Arabs” in retaliation for an assassination attempt.
----killed hundreds in that same village for the same reason
----attempted to deport all Iraqi Kurds to Iran
----gassed and entire Kurd village with saran gas
Oh yes, there’s plenty more. There is ANOTHER hurricane looming in the Gulf of Mexico. Her name is Rita. It is expected that Rita will become a Cat 3 or stronger and as of this writing on 9/20/05 in this year of our Lord, is it scheduled to hit Houston this coming Saturday 9/24/05.
A lot of the evacuees from New Orleans were moved to Houston.
We’ll see how Houston handles the storm.
From Mysanantonio.com:
Texas has spent more than $1.4 billion in homeland security money on an effort that was supposed to make people safer, but the program has devolved into a massive spending spree undertaken with inadequate planning, coordination or accountability.
The result: cities and counties remain exposed in crucial areas. For example, the state has spent $41 million on communications gear, yet many communities still can't radio one another in an emergency.
Also, as a result of the new hurricane threat, Mayor Nagin of New Orleans has issued ANOTHER mandatory evacuation order. This time to the people he urged to come back that he may keep his power and status. Which comprised almost 25% of the city. Remember this, Kaitlyn. Because in your day New Orleans will be a tourist area and not much more.
Read your grandmother’s words and know that the city once was a bustling port but also a cesspool of poverty. Citizens were kept in poverty that they may be bused once every four years to the polls to vote for the latest and greatest Democratic hypocrites.
Oh yea, did I tell you? Seems Senator Landreau was able to bus over 160,000 people to the polls during her senatorial campaign.
Yet they let the buses sit, unused and destroyed, rather than use them to evacuate.
Below is a link to an article that needs to be read in its entirety. The Army Corps of Engineers and some enterprising government contractors have managed to not only fix the break in the levee but to pump out the water until on this day of our Lord, 9/20/05, half of it has been pumped away!
God Bless America.
In addition, the death toll in New Orleans had been estimated at around 10,000. So far, the death toll for all of the Gulf coast is less than 1,000.
President Bush is taking a beating over this storm, both for his alleged slowness in reacting to the storm and for his handling of the war in Iraq.
Opinion polls in a non-election year mean pretty much nothing. It's so easy to respond to a telephone poller with a negative comment when one's precious vote is not in play. Indeed your Grandmother would probably give Bush a bit of a negative vote in that I think the man is one lousy communicator, he has an attitude of not sharing with the American people, he does a terrible job of making his agenda clear. He consistently refuses to defend himself from the vacuous attacks of the opposing party so much that the party base is demoralized and tired of carrying the man's water for him.
Were this an election year, with the Hildebeeste running against him as one scenario, I would likely give Bush a very robust positive rating.
Nonetheless there does seem a drop in the polls and Bush really, really needs to infuse some new life into his presidency.
The pundits slay me.
They're all out there, lying, lousy and lackadaisical, going on about racism, being poor, the deficit, yada, yada, without a clue one how the American people really feel.
We have eyeballs, Kaitlyn. We saw the Coast Guard rescuing people from roof tops with no mind to the person's race, color or creed. Indeed the evacuees from New Orleans have had a chance to look at the world anew what with Texas welcoming the evacuees with open arms. Those people know their local corrupt politicians failed them, allowing school buses to be destroyed rather than use them to take them out of that cesspool ran by Democrats for decades.
I think that somehow, someway, this horrible storm is change the dynamics of so much of America's political landscape. Americans really want the Gulf Coast to be rebuilt never mind the pundits who wax on like idiots about all the problems they will have in doing so. Tokyo, San Francisco, Chicago and Galveston are all cities that suffered horrible natural disasters and came back better and stronger.
How much history do these elite know-nothings have to ignore before they are seen for what they are? Which is people who want to have camera time and will say anything to get some.
It's not over, Kaitlyn. Somehow this whole operation has to be undertaken and what with tons of money being thrown at the problem there will sure be mishandling of it. The Bush bashers will have a ball for a while.
I'll be watching and documenting it all, Kaitlyn.
For you. Lest the lazy and inept education system in this country manage to change history.
Below some snippets and updates on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Amtrak Leaves Flooded New Orleans EMPTY!

Even though offers were made to the ham-fisted local officials who spent the immediate aftermath of this hurricane with their head firmly up their behinds.

From the Washington Post:

In fact, while the last regularly scheduled train out of town had left a few hours earlier, Amtrak had decided to run a "dead-head" train that evening to move equipment out of the city. "We offered the city the opportunity to take evacuees out of harm's way," said Amtrak spokesman Cliff Black. Another time, that would be a topic of interest to the MSM, but not now, when they are hunting bigger game.

~~~~~~~~~~~
First Katrina/Kaitlyn post-the Beginning-9/6/05
9/7/05-H urricane Folklore/Wisdom and Nastiness
9/12/05-Hillary's "Katrina Kommission" and the Debacle of the Debit cards
9/14/05-FEMA Email; Dumb, blond Louisiana Senators
9/15/05-Ophelia and Grandmother
9/16/05-Katrina and the Helpless PetsPat McLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13268258836565578400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3657509643702856398.post-75821842052171571302005-09-16T04:22:00.000-07:002009-02-07T12:31:29.491-08:00Gossip-More Stupid Penn; Katrina for Kaitlyn-About the Pets; Fishgiggles-Speaking of Dogs ...Price is Right Offers Trip to New Orleans as Prize
Well they said the show was taped way before the horror of Hurricane Katrina and tis probably so.
Still, on the show’s “Big Showcase Showdown” one of the grand prizes was, we’re not making this up, a trip to New Orleans and a speedboat.
We understand the boat, however.
The show aired on Thursday, September 8, 2005. It’s been a laughing stock ever since.
~~~~~~~~~~
The Heartbreak of the Pets
Of all the tragedy associated with Hurricane Katrina, Kaitlyn, it is the helpless and innocent pets that most break Grandmother’s heart.

Believe it or not, but the first thing I thought when mandatory evacuation was issued for New Orleans was ‘what about the pets?’

As it has turned out sweet Granddaughter, it turned out that people’s pets were a big issue in Katrina’s aftermath and the re-location of so many evacuees.

The most heartbreaking sight I saw of all the pics crossing my TV screen was a man who had been a holdout from evacuation. He wouldn’t leave because they wouldn’t let him take his dog.

This was the case so many times, Kaitlyn, and I daresay it is a factor the locals and/or Feds should sit down and think about when they plan their next failed or unadhered to evacuation plan.

No one’s going to leave their helpless dog or cat behind.

As it turned out, not all of New Orleans was flooded. Some homes were very dry and un-damaged by the hurricane. Thus many people did not want to follow the mandatory evacuation that was ordered AFTER the hurricane and the flood.

One such man finally agreed even though they would not let him take his dog. However, his dog was put into a crate and the man was promised that his dog would be taken care of.

The man said goodbye to his dog and went over to his pickup truck. Then he put his head in his arms and sobbed.

He sobbed and sobbed and as I watched his heaving shoulders I sobbed with him.

I was watching heartbreak.

Our own pets would be WITH us. Dog with brown nose is Cleetus. Black-nosed dog is Jo-Ann.

This was the case everywhere.

Oddly, the people rescued immediately after the storm by the Coast Guard often had their pets with them as they sat on roof tops awaiting a trip up to the rescue helicoptor by a basket on a winch. THEY were allowed to take their pets.

Although these people were dropped off on a ramp off of the Interstate so why not take their pets?

Husband and I agreed that as our form of help to victims of the hurricane we will house, love, feed and shelter one cat and one dog of the hurricane victims. Doubtful we will be taken up on our offer in that we are so far away. Still, it’s out there.

If The Wise I had advice to give to the folks planning for such events in the future, I would say make provisions for the PETS.

Most people are NOT going to leave their pets behind. To die? To Starve? To roam aimlessly until death gives them peace?

Not going to happen.

People who refused to leave because of their pets have not, as of yet, been forced to leave without their pet. It seems that some groups have started a rescue of homeless pets left behind and perhaps arrangements have been made. Witness the heartbroken man in the pickup truck who did finally leave once he knew his pet would be taken care of.

It’s not a small matter.

I don’t have the statistics but I’d wager that very few people just left their pets behind.

First Katrina/Kaitlyn post-the Beginning-9/6/05

9/7/05-Hurricane Folklore/Wisdom and Nastiness

9/12/05-Hillary's "Katrina Kommission" and the Debacle of the Debit cards

9/14/05-F EMA Email; Dumb, blond Louisiana Senators

9/15/05- Ophelia and Grandmother

<br /Pat McLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13268258836565578400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3657509643702856398.post-70583483266071832722005-09-15T04:15:00.000-07:002009-02-07T12:32:58.371-08:00"Katrina for Kaitlyn"-Grandmother Faces Ophelia; Guest Writer-On Acting; Pic of the WeekHurricane Heading Toward Grandmother

On the very day yon readers may be reading this missive, readers from across the fruited plain, indeed readers from around the world, Grandmother herself will be experiencing the effects of a hurricane.

If not being smack dab in the eyeball of Hurricane Ophelia.

As this is written the news reports continue reporting on this hurricane. The weather gurus seem not to know where the hell this thing is going but every time I look at the colorful weather maps the thing gets closer and closer to Delaware.

The tip of North Carolina often protects Maryland, New Jersey and Delaware from hurricanes. Which means that North Carolina gets hit more than the above states, heh.

In fact, as of this writing, the Governor of North Carolina has declared mandatory evacuation of some of the barrier islands off the coast of that state. AND has declared a state of emergency although some would argue this is an over-reaction.

Ophelia is now a category 1 hurricane but let us not forget that Katrina was a category 1 when it hit Florida and still seven people were killed in that state.

This brings the issue of Grandmother’s hurricane evacuation plan.

Everyone living on the Atlantic coast should have a hurricane evacuation plan, Kaitlyn Mae. Make sure you have one.

Your mother, she might not have one as she’s not as organized as Grandmother. For such words she will probably not talk to me for a month and send me nasty email but hey, let’s not go there.

Husband and I discussed our hurricane evacuation plan in light of Hurricane Katrina. We have, since moving to Delaware, had one hurricane scare by the name of Isabella.

We were new here to Delaware and, oddly, we also owned a home in Baltimore. As the hurricane honed in, we discussed the possibility of leaving.

Isabella, like Ophelia, was headed towards North Carolina. We discussed what we would do if a mandatory evacuation order went into effect. Husband declared he was going nowhere no matter what the state says. This when we had another house to evacuate to which we have no more.

In no way would either of us leave our pets.

This past week, stubborn husband now acquiesces that should the government issue a mandatory evacuation order we would, in fact, evacuate.

So we came up with a plan.

It’s not beyond the pale that Grandmother’s own home could be flooded by a storm surge, sweet Granddaughter, as we live only eight miles from the mighty Atlantic Ocean. Not likely, I’d argue, but could be, could be. The storm surge from Hurricane Katrina went inland ten miles.

Our plan is to be prepared for a hurricane and ready to go. Indeed there are evacuation routes right outside Grandmother’s door almost. Ways OUT and far from the ocean.

We will pack the Jeep and husband’s little car with as much as we can take. We will also pack up all of our pets.

We will then head to western Pennsylvania, somewhere around York, PA. Lots of hotels take pets but if not, we’ll find a kennel for them. We will NOT leave them behind.

We will hole up in the hotel and if our home is not flooded out, will head back home.

If the worst happens and Grandmother’s home is devastated like those in Mississippi and New Orleans, husband and I will both head to Massachusetts.

Why Massachusetts?

Not that I’m crazy about it what with all those liberals up there. But husband’s family all live in Massachusetts and when all is said and done, Kaitlyn, we have to fall back on our family.

I can’t depend on my family as they are all located near me and would likely be making their own plans. Don’t worry, Kaitlyn, I will take you, even your mother and father, with me if need be.

Hurricanes do hit Massachusetts, Kaitlyn, but I’m banking on the fact that if a hurricane hit us in Delaware it would likely not have the same impact on Massachusetts, if any at all.

Then, Kaitlyn Mae, well I guess we’d have to start all over again.

Don’t worry though. We WON’T be starting all over again in Massachusetts.

Likely we’d have to kennel our pets up north but we’d do that.

Anyway, just so yon Granddaughter and yon readers know with all this wit and wisdom about Hurricane Katrina, Grandmother has been there and done that.

Now, we have a plan.

First Katrina/Kaitlyn post-the Beginning-9/6/05

9/7/05-Hurricane Folklore/Wisdom and Nastiness

9/12/05-Hillary's "Katrina Kommission" and the Debacle of the Debit cards

9/14/05-FEMA Email; Dumb, blond Louisiana Senators

Pat McLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13268258836565578400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3657509643702856398.post-76576581499589266682005-09-14T04:41:00.000-07:002009-02-07T12:34:17.923-08:00"Katrina for Kaitlyn"-Email from FEMA, pics; Garden Bugs; The Mysterious EggAs of this past Sunday the Democrats continued to blame President Bush and the Feds for their own ineptness. Indeed the blond Louisiana Senator said the reason the school buses weren’t used is somehow because Bush is opposed to mass transportation.

They screwed up in Louisiana. They took a chance.

It was a bad decision, simple as that.

One can fault FEMA for not doing the state’s job quickly enough. There is something to be said for the federal government having such a plan should the first responders themselves be unable to react.

The head of FEMA has essentially been terminated. For the crime of acting like every bureaucrat all across the fruited plains: being unable to think outside the box.

First of all, sweet Granddaughter, people that work for the government, so your Grandmother alleges, are generally not the quickest on the draw. Government work is steady and provides good benefits. Most people with ingenuity and incentive tend to go into private business.

Every American who ever had to deal with the government on ANY matter gets it.

It seems that once FEMA’s head Brown realized that the state of Louisiana was a basket case he, well he became a basket case.

Imagine that. Quotables-Blanco,Dion;Web Site of WeekThe Mind Still Boggles

Kaitlyn,

It's now two weeks after the storm Katrina, sweet Granddaughter. I posted a picture below that should Hillary Clinton someday be your President, you get some idea of how her mind works.

The latest debacle in the Katrina recovery is the saga of the debit cards.

Oh. The head of FEMA apparently has been fired. More on this later.

The debit cards are a joke. I hope that's why Brown, the head of FEMA and responsible for the entire hurricane, global warming, constipation and maybe the extinction of the passenger pigeon., got fired.

At least to hear the Democrats tell it. That political party whose New Orleans mayor left buses to be ruined rather than used for evacuation. That same political party with a Governor of Louisiana who declared the Sunday before the hurricane as a "day of prayer:.

Anyway, it was announced that debit cards in the amount of $2,000 to victims of the hurricane and./or the flood.

Give away money. That's the ticket. Below, a tidbit about where some of this money is being spent.
NY Daily News:

Profiteering ghouls have been using debit cards distributed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina - intended to buy essentials for evacuated families - in luxury-goods stores as far away as Atlanta. ''We've seen three of the cards,'' said a senior employee of the Louis Vuitton store at the Lenox Square Mall in affluent Buckhead

This is supposedly a FEMA operation although at the same time the Red Cross is giving out debit cards worth $300.

So there's long lines of people in Texas, the state that happily took the many poor people that Louisiana left to die. Those evacuees are expecting money and...well, there's some confusion.

FEMA, which is the Federal Emergency Management Agency in case it doesn't exist in your day, Kaitlyn, announced that no debit cards will be distributed. Instead, checks or direct deposits will be made to evacuees needing money.

This makes sense in that there will likely be a record somewhere of people who were getting public assistance. It should be small matter to give them a check or direct deposit as they were getting before the hurricane.

To just give away $2,000?

This is perhaps why that Brown fellow was fired, although as of now he's not technically fired, just removed back to DC.

Whatever.

It's all a mess, Kaitlyn, imagine a government bureaucracy being slow and cumbersome. This surprises people?

For the past week I have heard nothing but caterwauling about this head of FEMA although the mayor of New Orleans and the Governor of Louisiana should be in jail for their criminal neglect.

Still I do not understand what Brown did wrong. It would seem, as the many news reports state, that the man padded his resume.

Well this is something never done before either!

It seems more and more that the authorities in Louisiana had every intention of laying this all on the federal government.

We've got eyeballs out here in la-la land, Kaitlyn. We see the hundreds of school buses left to flood in ruin while the Mayor of New Orleans wailed across the radio to send buses, send buses from all across the country.

Please remember this, Kaitlyn, when Hillary formulates a new "Katrina Kommission". If it's anything like that 9-11 Ommission-Commission, members of the commission would include Mayor Nagin of New Orleans and Governor Blanco of Louisiana.

Much easier to cover your tracks when you're part of the committee doing the investigating.

It's the Clinton way.

Tomorrow Kaitlyn, we will discuss the tragedy of the pets in all of this.

First Katrina/Kaitlyn post-the Beginning-9/6/05
9/7/05-H urricane Folklore/Wisdom and Nastiness

Pat McLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13268258836565578400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3657509643702856398.post-23503893119729724712005-09-09T04:39:00.000-07:002009-02-02T14:01:11.053-08:00Gossip-All Katrina Gossip; Katrina for Kaitlyn-Still Documenting the Truth; a 9-11 Pictoral Memorial

The Good Ship Penn

Of all the celebrities involved in the Katrina disaster, the story of Sean Penn has to be the funniest, silliest, stupidest and most dishonest of them all.

This loser, known mostly as a former husband of Madonna and not for any great acting or wisdom of his own, takes a boat the size of a dinghy out, ostensibly to “rescue” people.

Not that Penn is a stranger to publicity stunts, below is a pic of him with an Iranian Ayatollah, bad-mouthing America and sucking up to these bunch of sons of camels as if he were some grand diplomat.

Sell out your country for a photo op. What in the hell is a Senator from New York doing in the middle of all this?

Well we knew it was bound to happen. Which is why this is written to you, Kaitlyn, because they want to change history.

Beginning with the vaunted Mrs. Clinton’s vote to move FEMA under the Department of Homeland Security. Which she now wants to reverse.

At any rate, let the record show that the reason that the Red Cross did not go to New Orleans’ Superdome or Convention Center to help those suffering people was because the STATE OF LOUISIANA WOULD NOT ALLOW IT!

All of these congressional showboat investigations and Clinton’s proposed “Katrina Commission” want to beat up the President.

Kaitlyn, if President Bush did something terribly wrong during this storm I’d want his head on a platter too. But the man had to beg the Louisiana officials to declare a disaster, he’s had to put up with their lies and aspersions.

Congress, with their love of creating bloated bureaucracies, and local New Orleans and Louisiana state officials, were alone responsible for leaving storm victims stranded, not by Hurricane Katrina, Kaitlyn, you must understand, but by a flood caused by the breaking of levees in a city stupidly built ten feet below sea level.

By the time all the dust settles, perhaps when you are in high school and able to read this, Kaitlyn, it will be well known that:

…1/3 of the New Orleans’ police force left their job after the storm.

…Red Cross was denied access to the evacuees held up in the Superdome because the state of Louisiana did not want to attract even more people there. So Louisiana chose to let the 25 thousand people that THEY told to go to the Superdome to sit and suffer for four days until the Feds came to the rescue.

…Over 500 school buses were lost due to flooding as they sat in the school yards. This while Mayor Nagin wept and claimed he had no means to evacuate all those people AND even as it is plainly written as part of an evacuation plan for New Orleans in their Disaster Plan.

…The state of Louisiana and New Orleans specifically has been run by Democrats for the last 60 years.

…It was the military that eventually rescued those people, not their Democratic run state and city.

…Louisiana is the most corrupt state in the union and I do believe there will indictments when it all is said and done. The common saying is half of New Orleans is under water and the other half is under indictment.

If this so-called independent “Katrina Commission” does not note these above truths, Kaitlyn, then let this Blog and many others tell it like it really happened.

From Hugh Hewitt.com

The Fox News Channel's Major Garrett was just on my show extending the story he had just reported on Brit Hume's show: The Red Cross is confirming to Garrett that it had prepositioned water, food, blankets and hygiene products for delivery to the Superdome and the Convention Center in the immediate aftermath of the hurricane, but were blocked from delivering those supplies by orders of the Louisiana state government, which did not want to attract people to the Superdome and/or Convention Center. For now we are forced to listen to the likes of Nancy Pelosi (of California for God’s sake) rant and rave like idiots about the head of FEMA, who, they assert, should be fired.

It won’t wash, sweet Granddaughter. The American people KNOW what they saw. I write it because I fear that the history books you may read someday will be full of lies. Much like that “9-11 Omission-Commission” report which covered the guilty behinds of faulty politicians’ failure to act, if not outright treason.

As a resident of a part of the country susceptible to hurricanes (assuming you still live in the Merryland/DC area when attending school) I hope the information provided helps you make wise decisions should you or your family be faced with such a killer storm.

Hurricane Katrina bore down on America’s Gulf coast early on Monday morning, 8/29/05. It was a category 4 hurricane when it hit land, having been downgraded from a category 5 right before it hit land.

It was a huge storm.

Today is September 6,2005.

Below is a review of what has happened since Katrina hit through the above date. Below this is a short review of Grandmother’s experience with hurricanes that you know what to expect.

Hurricane Katrina had been hyped endlessly as a killer hurricane since the Friday before it actually hit land. The storm at first glanced off the coast of Florida as a category 1 and still it left seven people dead in its wake.

Like much of the country, I paid close attention to the path of Hurricane Katrina. Hurricanes and thunderstorms have always been a source of fascination for me, Kaitlyn, an oddity some would suggest. Beyond that, at the time of this writing, Grandmother lives only ten miles from the Atlantic Ocean. What happened to the coast of Mississippi could happen just as easily along the coast of Delaware. In a future missive I will detail Grandmother’s plans for evacuation should a killer storm like Katrina head my way.

Grandmother knows very little about the Gulf coast of the United States. I’ve never visited any state even remotely near there. The somber pronouncements that any hurricane above a category 3 would obliterate the levees protecting New Orleans fascinated me. I had no idea that the city of New Orleans is essentially a “bowl”, a dip in the landscape that is BELOW sea level.

Baltimore city has often been compared to New Orleans in terms of temperature, shellfish preferences and the ever-present humidity. Baltimore is NOT below sea level, however, although Baltimore did suffer a killer hurricane that had much of the Chesapeake Bay inundating the city.

It was so very odd to be sitting in front of my television and hear those pronouncements about busted levees and the devastation predicted for a hurricane over a category 3. Katrina was a high hurricane 4 and yet no one seemed overly concerned about the levees.

Something I also know little about, these levees, although I’ve learned quite a bit about them of late. As I listened to the weather forecasters and heard about the floods to come should the levees break, it seemed that the world should have been screaming and shouting. Yet the world continued to revolve, the handsome news anchors kept informing us about the danger of the levees and I watched it all from the comfort of an easy chair on cable news.

Various news personnel made their way to New Orleans during the storm. We were treated, as we always are, to sight bites of reporters bending backwards from the blowing winds and web cam shots of hurricane stricken areas even as the winds blew. It’s a form of fascination for the American public and we had a bit of a ho-hum attitude about it.

Florida had taken quite a few hits with hurricanes this year and the last. Florida managed to get through them with the storms’ devastation in most cases being a much smaller area than Katrina’s.

It was the Tuesday after the hurricane that the realization of the horror visited by Katrina became apparent. Beginning with the rather casual announcement that some of the levees protecting New Orleans from the ocean waters had been “breeched”. I imagined a massive cement wall with small cracks that would seep water, more an annoyance than a catastrophe.

The city of New Orleans, over the course of that Tuesday, was completely flooded. Before my fascinated eyes it would seem that what I deemed to be not much more than cable news background, exactly what was predicted to happen, actually HAPPENED.

Then all hell broke loose.

Before the hurricane, the Friday and Saturday proceeding, unbeknownst to me at the time but known now, Louisiana officials were debating whether to order a mandatory evacuation of the city. As I understand it, President George W. Bush finally phoned up Louisiana’s Governor, a doltish Governor Blanco, and begged her to order a mandatory evacuation of the city.

As of this writing, Kaitlyn, there is still an ongoing debate over who said what to whom. Whatever was said, a mandatory evacuation of New Orleans was made.

Only one problem. New Orleans is populated by approximately 480,000 people. Many of whom are poor and without transportation. Those people had no way to get out.

New Orleans opened up the Superdome for such residents and this also turned out to be a boondoggle. At some point the New Orleans convention center was also opened for the city’s residents. Why, and how, that came about is still unclear.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency were the first to come on the scene.

This was about Wednesday of the week of the storm. The cable news networks were broadcasting conflicting and confusing information. Beginning with the news that snipers were shooting at the rescue vehicles.

There were also tales that New Orleans’ cops left their jobs, that the people in the Superdome were trapped without food and water. The situation at the New Orleans’ convention center was so horrific it defies documentation.

Those people, Kaitlyn, did not have the luxury of simply riding out the storm in those city structures. Or the ability to simply leave when the storm passed by.

Those people were TRAPPED, Kaitlyn, in that with the broken levee the city had flooded. There was no way out of New Orleans and no way in.

Alabama and Mississippi too were hit horribly by the storm. Bridges and interstates were busted apart as if they were simply pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Entire houses were completely flattened.

Hurricane Katrina had effortlessly picked up houses and moved them a few miles down the road.

As of now, the two breaks in the levees have been temporarily repaired by the Army corps of engineers. All people at the Superdome and Convention Center have been evacuated to nearby states, most in Texas.

It goes on, Kaitlyn. Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana. Three states. All hit so hard by this storm they may never recover.

The spin has begun. New Orleans blames it all on the federal government, specifically President Bush. The Feds, for now, are trying not to cast aspersions but it comes out.

For some reason, New Orleans did not even want to do a mandatory evacuation. The Governor demanded 24 hours to “think” about her options. This only 48 hours before the storm was due to hit. 24 precious hours for someone who should never be in charge of anything much less a state, so she could “think” about it.

New Orleans cops left their jobs in droves, many participating in a little free shopping courtesy of abandoned stores then flooded.

FEMA responded to help evacuate those people left behind. FEMA stopped due to alleged sniping of the rescue vehicles.

Grandmother suspects that some of those corrupt Democrats running Louisiana needed time to decide how to best spin it all politically but we’ll get more into this later. For now they’re all happy to cast blame on the freaking President of the United States for God’s sake!

Kaitlyn, should Delaware’s coast ever be swamped by flood waters, first, Grandmother would get out of Dodge as even the inept authorities in Louisiana demanded. The last person I would expect to be on the scene to get me out had my good sense not prevailed and I ignored the evacuation order, is the President!

I would expect my Sussex county officials, the Governor of Delaware, hey, maybe even that creep of a Senator Biden, to be handling things. I would definitely be looking to the local police for help. Maybe after a few days I would look to the national government for some assistance in terms of money or rescue should I still need same. Such things are for the LOCALs to handle. Everybody knows that. Common sense dictates it.

Ah. There lies the rub. For the New Orleans police were nowhere to be found.

Yet the Democrats are out and about, boo-hooing and blaming the President for what THEY didn’t handle.

Ah, more on this will come out, Kaitlyn. Lest they alter history, Grandmother will provide you with the truth.

Written as it actually happened.

Grandmother’s Hurricane Experience
As of this writing, Kaitlyn, Grandmother is a hefty and experienced 55 years of age. Having lived in Merryland and now Delaware, all of those years, I’ve experienced a hurricane or two.

The very first hurricane of my memory is Hurricane Hazel. Which plowed its way right up the Chesapeake Bay when I was six years old. The storm bought such a huge storm surge that much of Baltimore was under water.

Of course I was very young and the memory is vague. I recall having to hide under my bed at the command of my father. Before diving under the bed I recall seeing trees and playground equipment fly past the window of our second floor apartment. Thus began Grandmother’s lifelong fascination with the storms called hurricanes.

Hurricane Hazel took out huge chunks of Ocean City, Merryland, which I live near now.

Another hurricane of my memory was Hurricane Floyd. It was during this hurricane that I got the bright idea of watching the entire hurricane from my front porch.

I had to be out of my mind.

The two dogs did join me for the adventure but were mighty weary as we kept moving back and back from the driving rain. Eventually some birds decided to join me, hand to God. The entire ledge under the porch became filled with birds of all kinds. They were perfectly safe there and didn’t seem to mind my human presence. Soon all sorts of objects were flying by and Grandmother, to the relief of the dogs, decided to go inside the house.

Just two years ago, Grandmother and husband were faced with Hurricane Isabella. We had just moved here to Delaware and husband and I debated what to do in the event of a mandatory evacuation.

“I’m not leaving for anybody,” husband said stubbornly. I chewed my fingernails and wondered where we could go and how on earth to tend to our many pets.

We did fill the tub with water and prepare for Isabella fairly well. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately from your mother’s perspective, Isabella didn’t hit Delaware near as bad as it slammed into Baltimore. Your mother was without electricity for a week and Baltimore had flooded areas for weeks afterward. Here we only lost our cable for a few days.

No doubt by the time you read this Kaitlyn you will have experienced a hurricane or two. Comes from living on the coast of the United States.

“If I’ve learned one thing from Katrina,” husband said to me last week, “is that if the government tells me to evacuate, I’m going.”

Quite a change from his stubbornness during Hurricane Isabella.

We do have a plan, Kaitlyn.

We’ll discuss next session.

Pat McLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13268258836565578400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3657509643702856398.post-26647264276323841672005-09-06T05:58:00.000-07:002009-02-02T14:01:11.054-08:00WeekJustPassed-Katrina,Renquist;Quotables-on Katrina; Web Site of the Week

There Aren’t Enough Words
This is a week just passed that surpasses them all.

I’ve spent the entire past week, like so many of you, watching the horror unfold in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Tomorrow there will begin a new series. Called “Katrina-for Kaitlyn”, I intend to document everything about this horrific hurricane.

Throughout the coming days, weeks and months, as part of the series, I will document, verbally and pictorially, the mess that was Katrina, the response, the recovery, and eventually, the investigation.

Because ladies and gems, there will surely be an investigation into the response to Katrina, which began quite lackluster and is now robust, vigorous and optimistic.

Lest Granddaughter Kaitlyn be given altered history as compiled by that 9-11 Omission-Commission, may my words and pictures, captured as events occurred. Using the newest communication vehicle of our era: The Blog.

Because the pictures are as much a part of the story as the words.

I shall document it all, from first warning through to the congressional investigation.

I’ll document for my Granddaughter, and yon readers, events as they began, the tragedy of the Superdome, the utter horror of the New Orleans convention center, the FEMA fiasco, the corruption of the city of levees, the many cops who left the job, the problem with the endless offers of foreign aid, the wonder of Americans reaching out to fellow Americans.

All for the grandchildren of America that history not be altered by the politicians as they grandstand to cover their own behind.

~~~~~~~~~~
If Katrina Wasn’t Enough…
This past Saturday, 9/04/05, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court died.
